You don't lose anything into the environment if you don't drill. We know where the oil is, and it's not going anywhere. It's a finite resource; it will get more expensive as it is depleted. Other people have some, we have some. So we let the others drill theirs now, and buy it from them now, while except for occasional temporary surges caused by politics it is relatively cheap, and save ours for the days when it starts running dry, and it gets really expensive.
