While AMD can't boot a bluewire special behind the curtain 2-way SMP kludge, Intel is announcing new 2/4/8 way servers:

Intel has made new additions to its server product lines, providing new two-way, four-way, and eight-way servers that are designed to facilitate a wide range of applications in the workplace. Intel hopes the new product offerings will allow its customers to help boost the power of their networks. Traditionally, two-way servers are often used for such operations as departmental e-mail, Web hosting, and e-Commerce functions, as well as file and print and firewall/proxy/caching server applications.

Four-way and eight-way servers, on the other hand, are used for larger database applications, such as high-end supply chain management, e-Commerce, and enterprise resource planning.

SPD has expanded Intel's server products for a variety of reasons.
Who's Working on Server Products?

The Server Products Division (SPD), which is based at the Cornell Oaks (CO) campus in Beaverton, Ore., and in DuPont, Wash., developed and validated the Intel two-way, four-way, and eight-way servers. The general manager of SPD is Abhi Talwalkar. SPD is part of the Enterprise Platform Group (EPG), which is headed by Mike Fister, vice president and general manager.

The Reseller Products Division (RPD), which has operations at the CO and Hawthorn Farm (HF) campuses in Oregon and in Folsom, Calif., worked closely with SPD to deliver the SBT2 server board. Jim Yasso heads RPD.

"The Internet is driving a rapid expansion in the number of segments covered by Intel Architecture-based servers," says Kirk Skaugen, director, Enterprise Boards and Systems Manufacturing. "At the same time, more original equipment manufacturers and value added resellers are seeing the value of participating in this rapid Internet build-out. These two fundamental industry trends are helping to drive explosive growth in SPD's business."

Intel has added the following servers to its product line:

Intel® SRPM8 Eight-Way Pentium® III Xeon™ Processor Rack Mount Server: The new Intel SRPM8 eight-way, high-end rack mount system features the Intel® Profusion™ chipset and supports up to eight Pentium® III Xeon™ processors. The rack mount server also provides hot-plug PCI (peripheral component enterconnect) functionality, a technology developed by Intel, which allows customers to upgrade and/or change their network cards and other peripherals quickly without having to bring down the server.

"The Intel SRPM8 rack mount system provides excellent, scalable, and high-performance symmetric multiprocessing for CPU intensive applications such as transaction processing," explains Hooman Dastghaib, product manager for the Intel SRPM8, of SPD.

A team based in DuPont, Wash., and Columbia, S.C., developed the Intel SRPM8. Intel builds the product both in DuPont and in Malaysia. The Intel SRPM8 product is now shipping.

Intel® SBT2 Server Board: SPD has worked closely with the Reseller Products Division (RPD) to introduce the Intel SBT2 server board for two-way servers. The Intel SBT2 was created to help provide performance and scalability in e-business environments.

"The Intel SBT2 server board allows our customers to harness the power of two-way Intel Pentium III Xeon processors to meet their needs," says Karim Fahmy, Intel SBT2 product manager, from SPD. "In addition to supporting Intel Pentium III Xeon processors, the SBT2 provides several new features, including 64/66 PCI slots and advanced server management capabilities."

Intel builds the Intel SBT2 board in Japan and Malaysia. The Intel SBT2 server board and the Intel® SC5000 server products are currently shipping and are available through the reseller channel.

Intel® SPKA4 and Intel® SRKA4 Server Platforms and the Intel® SKA4 Server Board: These three new server building blocks are designed to help deliver the performance of up to four Intel Pentium III Xeon processors for e-Business environments. They provide original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), systems integrators, and value-added resellers (VARs) with the ability to deploy servers that are capable of mission-critical workloads.

SPD in Oregon and Dupont, Wash., did the development work on the Intel SKA4 server board and the Intel SRKA4 and Intel SPKA4 server platforms. All products are currently shipping and available though the reseller channel.
