Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Lieberman (news - web sites), also campaigning to keep his Senate seat, drew criticism from his Republican opponent in that race for backing out of a debate scheduled for next week. Lieberman informed the debate's sponsor on Friday that he could not attend the event, scheduled for next Thursday, because of the demands of his vice presidential candidacy. Waterbury Mayor Philip A. Giordano, Lieberman's challenger in the Senate contest, said Lieberman's withdrawal ``displays his arrogance.'' ``If he can't devote 90 minutes to the state of Connecticut, he should get out of the race,'' Giordano said, referring to the debate's length. Lieberman's dual candidacy has been ruled legal by the state elections board, but has also drawn criticism from Connecticut politicians, including Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz, a Democrat. dailynews.yahoo.com
