"This indicates the issue is not funds, unless you are advocating military style public schools, which might be a good option."

The issue IS funds, on the contrary, because, in trying to deal with broken families, high crime neighborhoods, lack of a learning environment in the home, often lack of nutrition, and a host of other dysfunctions, schools are left with the responsibility to repair a broken social and economic system that works against mainly low income students and families. You're right that the repair work should not be the responsibility of the schools, but it ends up that way. So the issue, at least in the short term IS money.

Try telling a family not to split up because it affects the kids' education. Try telling a husband who stays out too late and drinks too much that it isn't good for his kids' education. Try telling the family to make sure the kids get breakfast, etc., etc. All the fallout from these dysfunctions lands in the classroom. And you think you can fix that WITHOUT more money?

I disagree. The public schools are absolutely hopeless. They should be turned into military schools with experienced drill instructors and brutal corporal punishment. Students should be taught to shoot and march, karate, and mathematics, and computing. Then we would not have to import so many foreigners to run our high tech industries.
