Joe, <I personally think that Intel's major justification for still being reasonably successful in the processor market can only be the uneducated average PC-user, who's simply too blind to see the writing on the wall.>

Maybe Tom needs to open up his own eyes a little more before accusing the average PC-user of being "blind."

But it probably won't hold the speed crown for long. Intel's Pentium 4 is expected to debut soon at speeds of at least 1.4 GHz, if not faster. And though Intel still holds the clear majority in terms of PC market share, AMD is holding its own as a competitor.

One major weakness for AMD, however, has been its inability to get its processors to work in groups of two or more. The company began to show signs last week that the problem is going away. At the Microprocessor Forum in San Jose, Calif., AMD showed off a computer running two AMD Athlon processors inside. The next step will be getting boxmakers like Compaq (nyse: CPQ) and Gateway (nyse: GTW) to put two-chip systems on the market.
