Teradyne does have a substantial business in test equipment for the communications industry, but they also sell semiconductor test equipment to semiconductor manufacturers, which is where they are expecting a slowdown according to the report I saw. As such, they are considered a "back end" semiconductor equipment company, which means that their equipment is used late in the manufacturing process, whereas companies like AMAT, KLAC, LRCX, and NVLS are "front end". Another back end company is KLIC, who make equipment to bond wires to the chips. Some people consider back end companies to be a leading indicator for the rest of the equipment industry.

Teradyne is the first big-cap company in the sector to warn of slowing in business, as far as I know.

RE:"I think TER is mostly involved in making test equipment for communication industry (telecom as well as Internet)."

TER is the largest domestic ATE {automatic test equipment) company. Their equipment tests analog and digital chips and supports almost all chip makers including memory, logic, RF, etc.
