OT Thread- I got a chuckle out of this spin too. At MS Investors website this is the big bold headline:

News Flash: IBM shares plunge after-hours

Well it turns out the "plunge" is 6%. Heck that happens to a lot of tech stocks hourly for about two years now.<vbg> Up and down 6% is absolutely nothing. The financial press sure loves to throw gasoline on the fire. -MikeM(From Florida)

>>Five to Ten Times Core? Nah. But I wish!

[Chromatis notwithstanding], Maybe not ten times core yet, but metro/edge traffic is gaining fast. Think local storage and caching, and virtual campuses within metro areas. I see it happening already, as I analyze the number of gigabit ethernet links being leased across dark area networks (DANs) <copyrighted 2000, FAC>.

Where T1s once sufficed, now 100 Mb/s and Gigabit pipes are being installed.

Much of this is "new" traffic, not displacement, made possible because of the distance-neutralizing attributes of optical. Remote storage area networks and remote serving (server farms), to name just two applications, are making phenomenal gains. And then there is the 'net, where SPs are caching pages closer to their users all the time.

Re: Metro Market - CIEN to buy Cyras for $2.6 Billion

Thread- My comments are off the cuff remarks with no research so take them with a huge grain of salt....

Anyone care to comment on this deal? In spite of the massacre that the telecom sector has taken, CIEN goes out and makes this move. Why? Two reasons.

First, obviously the service providers are not going out and dying(as one would believe by the recent stock market debacle).

Second, it's SONET again. If the leading WDM player opts to spend $2.6 billion for a SONET gear maker(who's current revenue I believe stands at, oh around $zero), doesn't that make you wonder about how the metro market is going to develop?

In quickly reading over the details, for some reason this strikes me as a reverse TLAB buying CIEN deal. -MikeM(From Florida)

PS Linked to this posts are some interesting metro stats.

Ciena to buy Cyras for $2.6 billion

LINTHICUM, Md.-- Shares of optical network equipment maker Ciena Corp. fell about 20 percent Tuesday after the company said it would buy Cyras Systems Inc. for $2.6 billion in stock, a deal expected to cut into Ciena's 2001 earnings. Ciena shares, which dropped as much as $19.07 to trade $77.31 earlier in the session, were recently changing hands at $81.

The deal expands Ciena's presence in the metropolitan optical market and complements its products used in long-haul network applications, Chairman and Chief Executive Pat Nettles told CBS.MarketWatch.com.
