Glenn - Here's an example of what I've read about fiber to the home.

Tom,

I see the advantange in the article and agree it would be great. Unfortunatly, I don't see our cable firm bringing fiber to the home anytime soon due to cost. This is a privately owned cable company and is relatively advanced particularly for a non heavily populated area. I have talked with management and the problem now is the cost of placing additional fiber beyond the distribution nodes. I am fortunate due to my location that I am about the only house on my distribution node. The cable ends with me so I do have fiber to the street but not to the house. In other words, I am at the end of the cable line. The cable company is not signing up more subscibers until they add more fiber to the street itself. Otherwise, their will be bottlenecks.

n Texas, my mother was 300 ft too far from the local switching station to get DSL, so she
got cable instead and she loves it.

My store in Meadville is too far from the switching station for DSL and the cable company will not add service due to the above mentioned issue. The store in Erie has DSL and it is rather slow compared to my cable. I can't say I know the bottleneck but the speed varies a lot where that is not the case on this cable.

By the way, ever try to talk a cable company into connecting you when they are not adding any more connections? I don't have the pull I can tell you that<VBG>
