DJBEINO, Ken, & Thread:

This looks like the beginning of a very important debate. To support Ken's position, one could look at the decreasing amount that is being spent on R&D the last couple of quarters:

9/00Q: $3.467M
6/00Q: $3.591M
3/00Q: $3.789M
12/99Q:$3.329M
9/99Q: $4.244M

3/00FY: $14.568M
3/99FY: $14.099M

Contrast the expenditure on R&D with revenues and units shipped for the same periods, and you can see that ALSC is spending proportionately less on R&D as time goes by. Is this typical of competitors?

DJBEINO:

<<what else do you guys want...>>

They must have a growth plan and articulate it. Admitedly, they are not good at this but that's where their competition is at.

If their plan is to build certain types of devices aimed at a particular market, that's fine. They should tell us the schedule of resorce allocations ($$ and people) and guidelines they wish to meet. Then announce their progress from quarter to quarter.

Based on their latest announcements, they've lost their communications director and slipped 12 months on a IRP processor. How can that be good news?

BTW, network packet processors are a hot item right now. MMC Networks, IBM, Motorola, Galileo, Sitera all have new products in that area. Software code is a major element in development. Unless you have a company wide effort to be in that business, their is no chance at beating the competition.

I am not trying to beat a dead horse (heck, I own this stock), but the Reddys haven't announced much progress on previous goals.

1. Where does the Flash really stand on contributing to company revenue? (Previously they said it should be a significant contributor this quarter.)

2. What'e the problem with the IRP processor. If its behind schedule, what's it going to take to get it back on schedule?

3. What's going on in the design center in India?

4. What's their die shrink schedule look like? Which devices have priority?

I think you get the idea. Its not rocket scientist strategy; just ordinary procedures in running a semiconductor business
