For example with my Lexar card, for $10 they sent me a slick little USB card reader...

Steve, are you talking about the bundled card with your Nikon purchase
or did you buy a Lexar card in addition to your 128 MB SanDisk card?

Just curious.

BTW, there is a full-page color ad for SanDisk in this month's PhotoPC Magazine. Sony is adopting the AOL strategy. They have an ad for their CD-R Mavica with a cardboard insert of the camera stapled into the spine of the magazine and a 3" trial CD-ROM glued to the back. When you flip the card over it looks like your are actually taking the CD right out of the back of the cardboard camera.

I plugged it into my PC and there is a Macromedia Flash intro as the disc spins up, then there is a single page of thumbnails with family photos. My PC would not read the photos because the glue used to affix the CD made it unreadable.

Looks like Sony spent a pretty penny on this promo.

Steve, you said; (re secure MMC)

HOW DOES A SECURE MMC CARD REALLY WORK?
Somebody out there must know the answer to this, but who?

It turns out you were wrong. The specification is being worked on as we speak. In fact, SDMI ( sdmi.org )
recently put a number of proposals up on the net to see if people can hack them. There is currently some controversy about whether some of these were hacked, and if so, if this is a good thing or not.

More details at the above web page, including a letter from the CEO explaining why you and I will benefit from having formats that have some kind of inbuilt copy mechanism. (well, not you and I specifically, but consumers in general)

One point of interest is that The SDMI specification allows people to make an unlimited number of personal copies of their CDs if in possession of the original CD

The implication there is that this copy wont play unless the CD is somehow checkable, which leaves the question of why I'd want a copy in that case! ( implied because if it will play without the CD, where's the security, and because of the phrase 'in possession of the original CD '.

Just the word "USB" right now is very techie. You're just too immersed in it to recognize it.

As for seeming "write," I think that may be another issue.
