Heinz, Arafat is still in control but to some extent the other party who is a grislier guy called Marwan Bargouti from Ramalah controls other parts of the population.

I wrote several post on the issue and the misunderstanding of the Westerners of Arab perception of honoring agreements or their keen desire to really achieve and implement them and their fundamental hate of Western World. I compare those time with those of the Templer 900 years ago (see my post's on MDD and Stock Attack treads)

It is not those more moderate leaders who were exposed to Western Culture but the population at large.

As to Arafat he has no interest in real peace and very few remember that he was the strongest ally to Saddam Husein in 1990/1991 and carried King Hussein along due to the over 60% Palestinian population in Jordan.

Hope it helps

Haim
