Do we really trust the people to do what is right?

If we can trust the people to make wise decisions about spending their money, why do we spend many times as much money on alcohol and tobacco as we do on education?

Why do we have laws against speeding and reckless driving? Can't we just trust the people to do what is right and reasonable?

Can we really trust the people to always make better decisions than the government? Before we had social security, most people did not save for their retirement. This was an instance where government made a better decision than the people. Now we have a government program for retirement that also is an insurance program against becoming disabled or dying. I'll bet your 401K plan doesn't insure you against disability. When people complain about the rate of return on social security, they forget about the other benefits.

I am old enough to remember life without medicare. Older people could not pay for their medical expenses and became a burden on their parents.
