Hi all; Further thoughts on the anomalies in RDRAM prices...

sylvester80's problem with smsperling is that sylvester80 has noticed that the prices of the cheapest RDRAM modules has dropped drastically, while the smsperling data has not. In this, I agree with sylvester80. Here's the changes in the two measures since Sep 22:

Cheapest Average
[sylvester80] [smsperling]
PC600 PC600 PC700 PC8000
Sep 22 $237 $2.294 $2.467 $2.771
Oct 19 $165 $2.068 $2.379 $2.740
------ ------- ------ ------ ------
Change -30% -10% -4% -1%

A more fair comparison between SDRAM and RDRAM would be to compare the prices of typical sticks to be used in typical workstations. Lets find the cheapest price for 128MB and 256MB PC800 and PC133 ECC memory, the memory of choice for someone setting up a hot workstation:

ECC cheapest memory comparisons

PC800 PC133 Ratio RDRAM
128MB: $186 $ 96 1.94 +94%
256MB: $365 $213 1.71 +71%

I think these figures are more indicative of the current price adder for RDRAM over SDRAM than the smsperling data. The smsperling data is skewed by RDRAM's concentration in more expensive memory types.

The above figures are in line with what I have been stating this year about what I expected in RIMM vs DIMM pricing:

Not that I predict that RIMM prices are as low as they will go. In fact, I expect to see them drop to under 2.0x DIMM pricing, less if there is a big memory shortage as is commonly predicted. #reply-13767231

My guess is that eventually the cost of RIMMs will stabilize at somewhere between 1.5 and 2 times the cost of DIMMs. This is in keeping with other industry estimates for the ratio. Right now RIMMs are way out of line, but I don't think that the ratio will stay that way forever. #reply-13382489
