Tube MODEMS would need fans... --- Okay, so we've identified several components that these desktop things don't need which would help bring the cost down. The fan, the hard drive, and the operating system. Okay now, what's up with this big 'monitor' business? Do we really need these? My Osborne has a 5" screen (built it). That's plenty of screen! If I need to read something, I'm going to use a pair of those x3 'dentist' glasses. We don't really need big screens. We have a pretty good idea of what's on the screen at any given time. The rest of the time, we're typing! I'm sure reasonable people could disagree about the need for a 'monitor'. It's something to consider though. <g> -JCJ

Charles - my laptop has a temperature-controlled fan. It almost never runs - only when I am in a warm environment, say sitting by the pool in the sun. But it is in there. Most laptops have some active way of moving heat out in addition to passive cooling.
