I will go along with the manipulative nature of the Utah insiders. But When MSFT has a choice to take a tough stand to defend a business vector or cave for external (non-business) reasons, I have NEVER seen them fail to take the business line. I have lots of anecdotal evidence going back a LONG ways. Whatever pressure you imagine being brought to bear, you can bet that there is equal and opposite pressure being prepared on the other side. Also those boys in Redmond play a long game and don't mind losing a few battles to develop a strategic position to win the war.
