You are incorrect on Japan. For 800 years Buddhism has been the dominant religion of Japan. You may notice the giant bronze Buddhas if you care to look. You may notice that Buddhist wedding ceremonies and funerals are used everywhere. Zen buddhism has always been the intellectual basis of bushido, as confucianism has been the philosophical ground promoted by the shoguns. Most Japanese buddhists are not zen, but pure land or amida buddhists. Surely you recall from your extensive study of Japanese military history the martial monks around Kyoto, whom Lord Oda had to destroy. As for the Indochinese, they are with few exceptions born and reared as buddhists. As soon as radicals became communists, they usually became atheists as well, but buddhism is atheistic, so there is no difficulty in an atheist being a buddhist or vice versa. Most buddhists, as you well know, are syncretic and retain a high degree of animistic belief. In Thailand, for instance, where buddhism is established, the king is advised by brahmin priests. The "spirit house" is everywhere, and has nothing at all to do with buddhism. As for Tibet, chinese emperor Kangxi invaded and conquered Lhasa in 1720 after some locals murdered Dalai Lama and put a phony in charge. The Qing suppressed the bandit tribes loyal to the Lama, and in 1911 invaded, put down rebels against the Qing, and Dalai Lama fled to India. In 1950, China brushed aside Tibetan resistance and conquered Tibet again. Your Tibetan peacefulness is a fantasy. Bogus history.
