"since they don't open up new contracts until a price has been achieved "

I believe it's when the stock gets within a few % points of the new strike, but no, I haven't seen a new 180 series opened on a stock with a high of 160.

"paid for with the proceeds of the short of course."

Your broker won't let you use the proceeds of the short to do anything unless the position goes in your favor.

". So any guidance on how to go short and remain calm is appreciated."

Just come to acceptance and experience your terror for all that it's worth. Tear off all your clothes and run around in circles screaming 'F***, F***, F***" like a maniac. -g- Seriously, the secret is allocation, knowing your position, and using stops. Waiting until the price reaches an extreme is also helpful, but you miss a lot of good trades that way.

Regards,

Barb
