Whoa! Now the drug problem is Nixon's fault? Come on, we can't get anywhere on this if things are so partisan.

That's just one reason why I support Bush for President. He's proven that he can get Republicans and Democrats together to get things done. He's done it in Texas. He's got lots more Democratic support than Gore has Republican or independent support. It's called, "bipartisanship." It used to be popular, before Clinton/Gore's divisiveness drove this country apart.

<Absolutely, 100 percent correct. The study/commission should have been formed 15 years ago! Nixon had a commission you know. It recommended legalizing marijuana. Nixon
repudiated the recommendation, called for stiff sanctions by federalizing marijuana laws, in effect, beginning The Drug War as we know it today.>
*************
Actually the war as we don't know it started around the turn of the century when Coke was pressured into removing cocaine from Coca Cola. Then a new war was started in the mid 30s to make marijuana illegal. Marijuana was not an illegal substance up until about 1937 when it was outlawed and criminalized. I've seen a number of the government news reels and some of the really sophomoric movies Hollywood produced at the time demonizing the "Devil Weed" and depicting those under the influence of pot as becoming demonic monsters possessed by violence and evil. The truth is most become giggly, lethargic or stoned and mildly paranoid. The Government publications were almost as sophomoric as the Hollywood stuff.
