as to who would...think about who's got something to lose by a sustained decline, and there's your answer.

you are of course right that manipulation doesn't stand a chance if it attempts to fight a primary trend. however, consider the experiences of the recent past, i.e. that past 5 years or so. as the primary trend was clearly up, instances of suspected market manipulation were able to successfully halt declines on several occasions. there has never been a single time when the piper really needed to be paid in the end.
therefore i suspect that a certain hubris has developed among those able to exercise some influence over the market in the short term.
