Yes, the blythe, even willful failure to look closely at what is going on in the worlds second largest economy spells trouble to me.

I remember well when I lived in NYC and worked on Wall Street in the 80's how all the 'pundits' were saying that the Japanese would buy the whole city, and that they buy and hold for their grandchildren so they were different and would never sell... they were very savy. Now THOSE SAME PUNDITS are saying what happened there can't happen here, we're far more savy. In fact some won't even consider a recession a possibility! Now, it's true our system is far more flexible, and you would expect problems to work themselves out much more quickly... but what exactly does THAT mean? One pondering that question may not come away with a much better feeling. DAK

OT * I am not sure any one is watching or if it is reported in the Western TV networks but unrest started in Jordan the Palestinians in Jordan is trying to violate old agreements , thest the new monarch resolve to order and on the other side Saddam Hussein is moving troops toward Jordanian borders. Remember Jordan Royal family is not from Jordan but from the Mecca / Medina region and brought to Jordan by the Brit's after WWI. The mob is chanting "Dear Saddam bomb Tel Aviv bomb the US" Egypt today declared the Peace Process as dead....... and ARRAfat is coordinating his moves with Saddam. The high stage of alert (DELTA) within US forces in hte ME is much more serious than this administration is willing to accept. The French are succesfull to undermine the US as global leader and are trying to take the lead in the ME and land plum contract in infrastructure and oil projects for French companies.Wach the 3 and 4th page news European newspaper.
