Dave, Re: As far as buying a Duron over PIII, you're the exception. Anyone on this board is an exception.

Proof positive! Exceptional people buy AMD processors.

Kindest regards,
CrazyMan

Over this last weekend, on either Saturday or Sunday, HSN sold over 10,000 Duron 800 systems in one day. While that was going on, some other channel (I don't remember which) had a PIII 733 system for sale for about the same price.

You are mistaken, Duron clearly does just fine against PIII.

5dave22 said about duron: "But they are viewed as a step below PIII until they do any sort of marketing to prove otherwise."

Of COURSE they are viewed as a step below P-III (and thunderbird for that matter), because thats what in reality they are. AMD never meant them to go against P-III, but against Celeron.. The fact they almost perform as well as a P-III in some applications and games is a big performance and bang for the buck bonus for those of us who cant afford P-III or Thunderbird. They were put out so AMD had something to counter Intel on both the low AND high end.

Maybe i've missed the discussion on this.. but I dont see why you think AMD should be marketing them against P-III.. thats Thunderbird's job.

Dave, I saw the same thing -- the Duron machines by the big OEM's are ridiculously overpriced, selling for twice the price of building it on your own or buying from a small shop.
