5% drop? what are they talking about? their revenue went up both sequentially and year over year. the "5%" drop was in growth expectations for the sector; it also had to do with optical revenues being 5% less than what analysts were expecting; but Nortel didn't experience a 5% comparative optic networking drop. the drop is mainly attributable to Nortel's inability to meet demand

one sympathetic example to Nortel is JDSU: they supply parts to this sector; what you don't see is the other optic networking stocks reporting any such decline. their revenue all beat expectations. Nortel represents the following market share according to Dell'Oro:

According to Dell'Oro, Nortel Networks captured 45.5 percent of the first quarter 2000 US$1.5 billion dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) market. Dell'Oro's figures also showed Nortel Networks with 71.1 percent of the burgeoning DWDM metro market and 44.6 percent of the long-haul solutions market. In the SONET/SDH market, Nortel Networks was again number one in the first quarter 2000 US$3.68 billion market with 33.3 percent

many of the areas where Nortel is weak in marketshare and application other suppliers, such as JDSU, remain strong. JDSU and others like it supply the whole networking sector, not just one company in it.
