Lone Star Shrugged, because he didn't recognize Ayn Rand, even after looked into the Fountainhead..
Wow, Michael, you're so well read, the rest of us can't keep up.
What you and Cary aren't seeing is that many of us have the same goals as you- I want people in need helped, reasonable social programs, etc. as much as the next guy. But bigger and bigger federal government is not the way. The federal government was established in this country to do those jobs ( national defense, interstate commerce, etc.) that could not be done solely by the states themselves. Those things and ONLY those things. And the states only did things at the states level that communities couldn't do themselves.
We now have existence proofs that welfare is far more efficient if done at the state level, and its welfare that does good- not some wasteful program, not some idea where a person gets used to suckling at the public trough and engendering bad habits, but welfare as a temporary cushion through a bad stretch and direction/help to finding and securing gainful employment. "Better to teach a man to fish..."
You talk of compassion. How much EFFECTIVE charity/good works goes wanting each year as higher and higher percentages of income get squandered by big government?
I know what to do with my money far better than Gore and his cronies.
