Caxton, Michael: it is exactly like betamax/VHS situation. The operator wants to have a system that supports the maximum amount of cassettes (i.e. handsets). Note that the dog breed of the future is the Golden Roamer.

This becomes a self propelling process, which is accelerated by the consumer preferences. Studies have shown that it is psychologically meaningful for the punters to have a phone that works in distant parts of the world – even if they are never going to go there. A lot of people who think Grand Canyon is a porn flick drive SUVs.

Also the equipment manufacturers will put their bets on the winning prospect, obviously, which becomes even more winning. After what is happening (even) in Korea, which way do you expect the smart developing money goes?
