Good points, thanks. The other time price fluctuations are alarming is if you use margin, especially a lot of margin. I have used a lot of margin at times, and that's when I very nervously check quote screens. But that's not a position to be in long-term. It seriously reduces your holding power. By the way, I've had the chance to talk with some people who have stock portfolios valued in eight (and sometimes nine) figures, and that's all they talk about, holding power -- and the retail chumps who are margined and/or need rent money and will sell out at the slightest perturbation.

It's fun to calculate one's net worth by looking at stock quotes, but it really doesn't mean anything, unless you're about to spend it. Not worth worrying about. Just look at that historical graph of NTAP and understand that the upward movement is our reward for enduring volatility; can't have one without the other.
