field personel are remote and not under constant supervision as with factory workers, so productivity is not as high.

I would be happy to debate that perspective, if u choose.

Reminds me of selling software applications. I wonder why NT can't book revenue when they sell the product and then book the revenue from the service side of the picture as the project is completed. I would bet it's an industry specific standard 'practice'. Installing the product is key though. Not only a huge selling feature (why CSCO will have problems in this market) but another large source of revenue as well.
