An observation:
The NDP is our version of the national socialist parties that took root in Europe in the 30's in order to counter the loss of sovereignty threatened by the international socialists (communists). The left wing choice at that time was nationalist v internationalist. In one country, the National Socialists got power and their nationalism combined with their zeal for government power to produce a fascist movement.

We all know the horrors perpetrated by the Nazi's, as the National Socialists became to be known. I have grown to hate both nationalism and socialism because I know how those concepts can change society in frightening ways. Oddly enough, some left-wing demagogues now call the Nazis 'right-wing', as if to distance themselves from the stigma.

Faith in the state is -- like all faith by definition -- a belief without evidence. In this case, it is a dangerous belief because it robs you of the ability to chart your own course. Charting your own course is a fundamental human right and responsibility. I am convinced that the ultimate 'sin' in life is to abrogate your responsibility to decide your own fate. The only possibly worse affront to humanity would be to try to force others to do the same.

As far as the elections go, I'm leaning heavily towards Day and the Alliance because:
1) The libertarian streak in the Alliance is strong
2) Day's (and some members') socially conservative stance will not be allowed to influence the Party's policies to a great extent. The impact has been limited to some unfortunate definitions affecting homosexuals - and even that will be relaxed over time because of the party's libertarian element.
3) Day is a damn good money manager.
4) Minority governments make better legislation.
5) If the Alliance and the Bloc make up a majority, we will see the feds retreat a bit from Provincial areas of responsibility.
6) The PCs are burnt toast.
7) The NDP should be burnt toast. Or burned at the stake.
8) The Liberals are too willing to sacrifice taxpayers money for a few shallow political points (e.g., year-long maternity leave, canceling needed helicopters, rifle criminalization and registration, buying Atlantic votes with the Tags program,... you get the idea).
