If you buy a $500 ticket, Priceline receives roughly a $40 commission for its service, but recognizes the entire $500 as revenue on its financial statements. The company has always defended this practice, saying it holds the tickets in its inventory, and is therefore taking the risk. But what risk is there if the customer has already paid for the ticket with his/her credit card? Priceline.com traditionally had a sky-high price-to-sales ratio, and if they adopted accounting practices suggested by most accounting experts, its ratio would increase approximately 12-fold!
