I suppose whether you would be welcome at the argument would depend, of course, on the arguers.

As a result of ideas that posting on this thread has led me to, I've decided that I want to read the Talmud, and told my husband so. He reminded me of a joke I told him about a crew team of rabbinical students which I really didn't remember - the punch line being, "no, no, you're supposed to have eight people rowing and one person shouting."

It helps the argument if there is a common language, but that can lead to insularity.
