I suspect that in most cases, assuming we speak of civilized people, they would think me welcome, and even try to make me feel welcome. It wouldn't work, though, simply because the basic parameters of their discussion are unacceptable to me, and the basic parameters of my worldview would be unacceptable to them. We could only have a civilized discussion by talking about something other than religion.

Not a very interesting one. My parents were devoutly Catholic; like most devout parents, they did their best to indoctrinate their children. I resisted, and a certain amount of unpleasantness resulted. Eventually they gave up; a decade or so later they ceased to be Catholics themselves.
