Well, may be they kill that uptick rule... then shorting would have certainly became competent part of the game (aside from borrowing issue).

That uptick rule has got to go. But what I do in this case is use ARCA and set my limit maybe a point below the market to try to catch a breakdown.

Amazing how your entire trading changes when you realize that your job is NOT picking the tops and bottoms but rather spotting the trend.

This is so true. I used to try to pick the tops and bottoms and sometimes it worked, but most of the time I was caught going against the trend. On Friday, I traded well by going with the trend. It's amazing how much easier it is when you do that. So the trick is to be able to identify the trend as early as possible and to recognize when the trend is broken.
