The European Union will deploy a rapid reaction force of 60,000 troops by 2003. They won't need us then.

NATO is perceived as necessary by Cold War nostalgics who just can't let go.

Stop fear-mongering and get a life, X. You sound like the Gore-ites who will do anything to induce hysterical, knee-jerk responses against Bush.

Why don't you focus, instead, on Gore's statements about what REALLY constitutes the biggest threat to mankind, the internal combustion engine (i.e. "Detriot")? Come on, let's hear it.

I believe it is very much against our national interest to destabilize Nato.

I'm sorry to be rude, X... but do you have any idea what you're talking about here, or are you merely spouting the "party line"?

Withdrawing US forces from the Balkans, or certainly reducing US presence there does not equate to leaving NATO. In fact, if you remember your history correctly, it has been the US that has had been the major impetus behind the organization.

The Balkan crisis began with United Nations forces were unable to contain the situation. It then fell upon NATO to move in and take control.

Well OK..... now NATO has done it's part and it is now time for US NATO forces to be withdrawn and for the UN to once again take over the mission or to put it under EU control.

NATO is NOT a peacekeeping or nation building organization. It is a war-fighting structure designed to create a mutual defense network of member alliances.

NATO being forced to become involved in Yugoslavia was destabilizing enough.

i am not for ending our relationship with NATO nor the United Nations. i am for the US taking a bolder stance on some of the issues. further, a time should come when Europe takes care of Europe. i have never heard or read anything by the politicos that speaks to the idea of a genuine "someday" exit strategy in regard to us being a NATO. i am not an isolation either--just trying to be practical on limiting our involvement in those affairs best managed by those countries which are the actual neighbors in the conflict.
