Steve, I submit that there is another possibility: the process is indifferent to you as an individual.

That is exactly my point. If the process is indifferent to the individual - as it pretty obviously is - and we assume a designer, we have to assume that indifference is either an intentional part of the design (the designer is indifferent, cruel, whatever) or that the indifference is an accidental side-effect of the design (the designer is inept).

Or we can cease to assume a designer, in which case the observed indifference to the individual makes perfect sense.
