Indifference to you as an individual doesn't mean you don't matter, just that you don't matter as much as you think you should or might. If an ant colony loses one ant, NBD. But if it KEEPS losing ants, day in and day out, then there is both a qualitative and quantitative difference that appears at some point. This loss creates a signal.

If the intelligent agent doesn't care about 1 sparrow, it might care about all sparrows collectively and respond somehow to that. Can we all be sure that loss of species is not "remembered" by the distributed players in our ecosystem? I'm not sure we can assume that our presence isn't noticed in some way that transcends the physical impacts we have. That was my point with the skinned knee. You notice it but in a way that might be fundamentally differently than the cells left behind to die on a rock.
