My point is that liberalism fosters the attitude that the government can and should take the place of parents (not in absolute terms). I agree with you wholeheartedly that more parental involvement is needed. Now I ask you, which party asks the people to take on this responsibility and which party asks (or promises more programs and more and more spending) for more governmental involvement,, hmmmm? That is politics. That is a basic philosophy about the level of individual responsibility for the upbringing of our children. And that is a dem-rep issue.

I appreciate your close experience with the educational system. I hear much of the same from my relatives that are teachers and tutors. They (my relatives and friends) do however admit that the unions are a large obstacle to meaningful reform. Protecting poorly performing teachers and the status quo. They are complicit in this regard. If I gave the impression they are "destroying" the system, it was unintended.

Most teachers are fairly compensated for their work. Sure they start out low. But the coursework (for an Educ degree)is relatively simple. With tenure and masters degrees (also easily attained) teachers are quickly into the 40's and 50's. Work 9 months (instead of 12, another big reform issue that the unions fight tooth and nail). I wouldn't mind paying more for better quality teachers but the unions can't stand anything that smacks of competition.

I agree that little can be expected of any program without parental involvement. How far the democratic party has travelled from JFK..."ask not what your country can do for you..."
