If you cut back on what education provides- and expect parents to pick up the slack(what you term "responsibility)- when they clearly have no time, because they are busy working all the time to support the glorious economy- I think you will have a wrenching dislocation, that will harm children.

I blame our whole societal emphasis on things, and material wealth, for "forcing" two parent households to work such long hours they shouldn't even have dogs, let alone children. This emphasis on materialism I won't pin on either the liberals or the conservatives- but when I hear hymns in praise of capitalism, forgive me if I don't join in.

I agree with you about testing of teachers- and in fact many teachers in the unions agree with you. I think that is one problem with the union- that in an effort to protect teachers it protects bad teachers- but in my experience I haven't seen a great number of bad teachers- and I've been in 7 schools heavily involved, and tangentially been in at least 15 others.

Most teachers are fairly compensated for their work.

Actually, I'm quite in disagreement with you...

Teachers ARE underpaid... but the way to resolve the issue are for more merit based raises to offered, rewarding excellence and increasing competition among teachers with a financial incentive.

I'll never forgot how my own high school lost one the best biology teachers I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, simply because he could make more money than our small town could offer him, despite the fact that some more mediocre teachers were making the same salary as he was.

Btw, I also offer praise to those who volunteer their time to our local schools. I know X is angry at me right now, but I think it's really cool she spends so much time subbing. I also subbed when I first graduated from college..

But I knew the jig was up when this 2nd grade boy came up to me, look up at my 6'3, broad-sholdered frame and announced, "I know who you are!!! You're Kindergarten Cop!!!"

I lost all ability to control them after that.... <VBG>
