I'm extremely surprised the thread is so quiet about DDR. It's like lots of inflated expectations got popped.

Popped? 10% improvement, and higher on certian specific benchmarks, is great. DDR is a perfect platform for the Athlon.

AMD has really developed the Athlon into a quality name, and this will only continue. The P4 isn't going to rescue Intel, as in return intel to clear dominance. AMD will only increase the size of their piece of the pie.

Cirrus,

I think Anand is just trying to expand his benchmarking suite. I'm glad he's using SPEC.

I disagree. I would prefer more real application tests. I think I prefer Tom's suite. I would like someone to report some database results of any kind and some blended Photoshop scores. Also, maybe some Autocad scores.

Tom has one encoding test. I would like to see more of those, and some compression / decompression tests. For example, WinRar compression at highest compression settings challenges the CPU greatly.

The last think I care about is the test of how well either side is able to optimize the compiler for a synthetic benchmark. It has very little to do with how the system will perform.

Joe

It just looks like a no op for Q4. Once again, the check's in the mail. But

and they also have another ace up their sleeves which they have yet to reveal...

RE:"I think Anand is just trying to expand his benchmarking suite. I'm glad he's using SPEC. It showed the Athlon system was lagging the PIII because of a lack of memory bandwidth and Via's chiset. Even if the P4 blows away the Athlon in SPECfp it still has to prove itself in the other benchmarks."

Shawn,
DO NOT BE FOOLED. It is much more than a coincidence that SPEC scores are just now showing up in Anands benches.
We have known, thanks to Elmer, that the P4 will do well in certain SPEC benchmarks. I said 9 months ago that if P4 won't bench well on the traditionally used benchmarks that Intel will simply change the game. It's already happening. Intel, through Anand and probably some more sites is changing the rules of the game. If I am wrong, I will gladly admit it when P4 is announced. Expect a lot of SPEC on Intels webpage. The one other, more widely used benchmark, will be Quake III. So look for SPEC and Quake III to be showcased when P4 is launched...
OTOH, Toms site probably won't be bamboozled...

I'm NOT saying Mustang won't win it's fair share though.
