Yes, Dan, I did see Kaplan's article on Pakistan in the September Atlantic. (I have a subscription to the Atlantic, simply because some Vietnam vet and/or drug rehab graduate came peddling magazines to my door, and that was the only one I could possibly consider subscribing to.) Pakistan has always struck me as a particularly nasty piece of the world, although I must confess I've never been there. As for Timothy Garton Ash, he at least limits himself to Eastern Europe. After all these years of writing about the area, he's earned the right to claim some real expertise.
