Wigginton: I saw a story this past week that said some large corporations -- Motorola I believe was one -- paid no federal income tax last year because of tax loopholes and write-offs and slick CPAs and tax lawyers and such. (I am looking anew for the story; if I find it, I will post it here.) I am all for management and labor marching hand in hand to boost profitability and provide good jobs for dedicated hard workers. I am not for corporate welfare or corporations with millions of dollars of profits who escape any income tax liability whatsoever.

I think it is obscene for any large corporation to avoid any federal income tax liability while Joe Worker has to fork over a third of his paycheck in federal, state and local taxes for new sports stadiums or scatter-brained ideas like the $400 billion "Star Wars" ABM system.

George,

In Al Gore's book, he derides us for wanting "stuff" and sees our need for stuff as a means of escape from our otherwise painful life. I get the sense he thinks he would be doing us all a favor if we had less money and the lessened ability to get more stuff. We would then rape the planet less and have more time to smell the roses. Interesting concept from his aspect, though not from mine. I like to smell the roses but want my stuff with me when I do so. He must have been high when he wrote the book.
