To: JHP who wrote (84785 ) 11/1/2000 9:24:27 PM From: Skeeter Bug Read Replies (2) | Respond to of 132070 jhp, the main issue is ignorance, imho. we cheat our children by not teaching them finances in school. they grow older, earn money and spend it on stooopit stuff that they don't need (read, 18 yo kids in $25k cares). those folks then grow old broke and want a check. i understand why you like ss. you have benefited tremendously according to your account. please understand that there is a very REAL possibility that my generation will not. in fact, we may not see any of it. just let a recession hit us like has happened in japan. ss will be in the toilet. what kind of system takes almost 15% of their earned money from people all their lives and returns little or nothing? you want me to support that? yes, i make the correlation between train light and impending collision. i don't mind paying and getting nothing. i really don't. i think a small safety net is righteous. a financial bat beating me over the head is something different altogether. i think 15% is a bit steep so folks can "beat the system" and brag about ss. btw, you didn't answer whether your car was more valuable than my 16 yo camry. ;-) ps - i'm glad ss worked out well for you. you played by the rules and shouldn't be ashamed of that. please understand that was good for you might not be good for others. pss- re: "special class." nobody would know but the mailman and those you told, right? if they did, so what. i've learned a while back that i really don't care what people say. i try and take inventory of my approach to make sure i'm doing to others as i would have them do to me. if so, people can think what they want. i am sure enough not going to let others impact my view on the world (when i'm in a right mind about 2% of the time! ;-) if i'm old and needy i would want support. hopefully i was old and needy through some misfortune and not my own greed, self gratification and waste throughout my life. if i'm old and wealthy, i would not want some poor guy making $6.50/hr raising 2 kids sending me a check knowing he probably will get 25% of what he puts in. reasonable? i REALLY think so.
