...Seems like a "free vote" in the new parliament could ban abortion and restore capital punishment without the unpleasantness of party politics. Saves the politicians the trouble of telling the electorate what they stand for during the election...

Day is not scarey for his practise of religion, but for the extent to which he may or may not force the tenets of that religion on the rest of us ...

How do you feel about politicians like Svend Robinson letting his beliefs affect his political decisions and forcing the tenets of those beliefs on us???

Marcos: Clear your head. If you think that abortion is more important than economic success of this country as a whole, your sentiments are in the wrong place, and your priorities are part of the problem, not part of the solution. You've got to think of the big picture, the whole country, your future, not one small issue that would affect a tiny number of Canadians.

Chances of ANY one woman wanting or needing an abortion are slim. Women are not lining up to have abortions, but they ALL pay taxes once a year.

Indeed, there are a lot of young, sexually-active girls out there (I know some) who have had a few abortions because they lack the sense to abstain and/or use a condom. Those girls are so socially deficient that they will not change. They are the "regular customers", to put it bluntly.

And there are women who, for reasons of incest, rape or illness who should have the right to an abortion. However, reality and ideals are a long, long way apart. I know a woman in a neighbouring town who saw her father continually rape her sister for years and years. She didn't tell anyone, and she didn't try to stop it because she was thankful it was her sister, not her. Her Dad got to her only a couple of times, one such incident which led to her having a slightly retarded baby at the age of 14. She had to plan her days all of her childhood so that she was never at home when her Dad was home. However, her sister was mentally retarded, and home all the time. The poor thing.

In case you don't have any personal acquaintances who have been affected by incest, an abortion is unlikely in those circumstances. Why? Because in the case of incest, one member of the family dominates and controls another. The "victim" rarely confides in anyone for fear of emotional or physical harm. And even when pregnant, the "victim" will rarely divulge to the doctor who the other parent is. Why? Because the victim is afraid that she will find herself out on the street. And the "perpetrator" makes darn sure the victim has the fear of rejection and abandonment well ingrained into her psyche.

The result is that the baby is born anyway, and the "perpetrator" keeps on doing what they were doing, and the "victim" keeps on being the victim.

I do not think that one man has the agenda nor will he have the power to overturn current abortion laws. Stockwell Day at least tells us what he is all about, unlike the Liberals who have mis-managed public funds to the point that there are over a dozen RCMP investigations. Would you rather support a party that lies and hides wrongdoings, or a party that tells you what they are all about? Which one is more likely to bring you harm, financially or otherwise?

The reality that bothers me is that Canadians forget that every time the government screws up, every time they overspend or mismanage money, it comes out of your pocket. You personally. It isn't the "government's" money that they are blowing, it is YOURS. Don't you think you should have a say in whether your money is spent wisely or not? Or maybe you would like a little more of "your" money to keep in the first place?

Do you trust Mr. Chretien, who boycotted the meeting with the Attorney General? Who has some of the RCMP investigations into public misuse of funds IN HIS OWN RIDING?

Do you trust Sheila Copps, who said she would quit politics if the GST went through, and did, only to get back in again a few weeks later?

There are a WHOLE pile of women, and men, too, who face excessive taxation. If our social ills could be fixed by the wave of a wand or the implementation of a law, the Liberals would have done that (they already tried).

However, I can trust a man more who IS what he says and SAYS what he is than one coming from a party that lies, steals, and cheats.

You are voting with one thing in mind - the possibility that Stockwell Day could use his influence to change abortion laws. If he, like every other politician, wants to stay in power, do you think he will let his personal beliefs dictate his agenda? Do you think he will be willing to commit political suicide and go against the wishes of his constituents? Not on your life.

Come on, man. Find something real, something tangible, like taxation and the Charter of Rights to decide, not some "IF-THEN" possibility which will never impact you personally. You are falling into the trap of scare tactics. Clear your head, decide what is more important - your ability to succeed, be happy, and retire with some money in your pocket, or the unlikely event that Stockwell Day will go against his constituents and the other members of his party to change abortion laws that will never impact you directly anyway.
