OT General Market info: Profit Roundup
Eighty-six percent of the S&P 500 have reported third-quarter profits, which have risen an average 19.6 percent from a year ago, according to First Call/Thomson Financial. Earnings have beaten analysts' expectations by an average 3 percent.
About 59 percent of the companies that have reported so far have beaten estimates, while 12 percent have missed, in line with last year's results during the same period. Last year, 64 percent of companies beat estimates, while 12 percent fell short.
Analysts surveyed by First Call expect companies to report earnings growth of 12.2 percent in the fourth quarter. That's less than the 15.5 percent analysts forecast at the beginning of October.
