Let me throw out a scenario.....

Under your scenario, in today's world, there is a good probability that the middle manager would be escorted out by a security, and his personal belongings would be shipped to him in a box.

But there is a huge difference between a busboy or a construction worker and a vice president of the united states or a cabinet secretary. They need to maintain public trust, and they have sworn to uphold the constitution.

If you want to look at man of honor, just look at much lower ranked employees who resigned their jobs rather than playing pawns in political games. There was person who was part of the inspection team in Iraq (whose name escapes me). When he was asked to "pretend" to be an arms inspector for PR purposes (and loot the other way), he rather resigned.

You may find men of honor in Nixon White House, who either resigned or got themselves fired rather than play politics. Unfortunately, there was not a single individual in Clinton cabinet who did the same, which may tell you about the integrity of the whole team. Al Gore is just a member of this "team".
