Convict on Death Row Wins Reprieve TEHRAN (Reuters) - A convict on death row in a prison in southeastern Iran won a last minute reprieve when parents of his victim announced they had forgiven him for the murder, the official IRNA news agency said on Thursday. The convict, Mohammad Reza Partiban, had been sentenced to death for stabbing his young victim Ahmad Arjmand to death in 1998. But he escaped the executioner's rope when Arjmand's father pardoned him just before the hanging was to take place. According to Iran's strict interpretation of Islamic law, death sentences, based on the law of retribution, can be commuted if the victim's family pardons the killer. The murderer still faces a possible court sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
