<font color=red>"AMD is planning to introduce a special server Athlon Ultra 1.4GHz in November. It will be base on the same Mustang core and will support from 512KB up to 4MB L2 cache depending on the customers demand. And these CPUs will work not only in dual- but also in multi-processor configurations. "

In fact, we can't quite make out how Intel is going to compete with Athlon Ultra. Now they have just a 700MHz Xeon with a large 1MB/2MB cache and that's it. As to the latest info, Intel isn't going to make any significant changes here. Again Pentium 4, and namely its server version aka Foster, appears Intel's only hope here. However, Foster will be a really sorry sight until Q2 2001, because at first it will support only dual-processor configurations and will feature a 256KB L2 cache. This is again very favorable for AMD, because the company gets enough time to convince server manufacturers of the necessity to use Athlon Ultra in their products. And in Q3 2001, when Intel provides its Foster CPU with multi-SMP support and large 512KB-1MB L3 cache, this CPU will become a worthy alternative to Athlon Ultra.

However, there is one market sector where Intel has been totally defeated: CPUs for Internet appliances and the like, which is called Information PC thanks to VIA.
