Agreed, elmatador -

The big buildout awaits. Spectrum has been bought, geographical footprints obtained, standards adopted, and technologies evaluated. Despite the tremendous amount of capital expended for spectrum, the anticipated infrastructure changes will also require huge amounts of capital, and will take years to complete.

I think the markets, particularly the capital markets, and the providers, are taking a collective deep breath before the first commitments begin. These will be "bet the company" choices. The recent downturn in communications, IMO, is a sober evaluation of the cost considerations, and their implications.

Hi elmatador,

This past week, Venture Wire, a news service to the VC community started to report downturns in new VC money flow, particularly to new start-ups, with more money now staying with mezzanine prop-ups of companies in the midst of development, who have had the IPO exit for VC money temporarily blocked.

So, it would seem that the pace of innnovation and creative destruction will be ameliorated temporarily.

The bond market has clearly indicated its displeasure with the role that it had been expected to play in the UMTS roll-outs, among other excesses. Advances in comms technologies won't be allowed to move too fast, if the result is to cripple the providers and saddle them with too much debt. The whole process needs to mature. I am very much in agreement with your assessment. :)

-Ray

Red Herring did a story the other day about VCs and the optics sector.

redherring.com

Kleiner Perkins partner Vinod Khosla mentioned his current investments are going to companies that can provide software or equipment to service providers that will help them utilize the bandwidth available on their networks and better utilize the fibers and wavelengths they've bought.

Companies mentioned are private, including IP Unity, SS8 Networks, Coreon, Sigma Systems Group, and ipVerse.

My question is what public companies are positioned to take advantage of this potential next shift in priority? Anyone have any ideas?
