Re: Congratulations, Paul, on your purchase of a DDR Athlon system from Micron!"

It's a crippled DDR system - it's Backordered for 6 weeks.

Where is all that AMDroid venom and bile ?

<Dan3: Contrast that with the experience that will face anyone foolish enough to buy one of the near term P4 systems. The socket is being changed in less than 6 months and the whole system will have to be junked when the "real" P4 motherboards come out next spring using DDR instead of Rambus.>

IMHO people over-exaggerate these motherboard issues in the extreme. Who cares if Intel switches sockets? I sure as heck don't. I wouldn't ditch my 1.4GHz P4 anyway - it would, in time, be degraded to secondary computer or the like, but I just can't think of a scenario where I'd junk the processor without doing the same to the motherboard anyway.

Add to that the number of people who actually ever open their computers and there can be little question that this really isn't an issue for 99.9% of end-users.

It is, however, an issue for OEMs, motherboard makers, etc. who have to make and qualify new boards/systems, while running the risk of being stuck with a bunch of worthless components. This applied to AMD when they went from SlotA to SocketA and it will apply to Intel when they switch P4 sockets.

But as an end-user, I just don't give a hoot.
