Check the number of workers at the center who come from Alabama. I have no idea why it got located here, but it is not an industry that draws on local workers. A carplant was deciding whether or not to put a plant here a few years ago. One of the key issues was whether or not there were enough qualified workers. It was a sticky point because it was hard to promise it. Gladly, the plant came and is doing well, providing some very decent jobs for people. You misunderstand what I meant by lo-tech. I come from farm people. I love that we're covered up in farms now. Which you know, though, is rather hi-tech these days. But to deny a problem or react to it's being brought to light with denial or false pride does nothing to address nor solve it. Doing that is one of the reasons that so many here still live in such poverty. Ride the backroads sometime. Don't look at the bucolic splendor, or think how quaint and old-fashioned. Talk to the kids who are in the eight-grade at 15 and dropped out by 16. Look at the leaks in their roofs. The teeth that are rotting and will not get fixed. I would never, and have never, denied the good, and beautiful, qualities of Alabama or her people. But I want something more than the hopelessness feel.

Just interesting that it should be located where the people are too "dumb" instead of Silicon Valley where the sharp people are. The problem is the conservatives on this thread repeatedly refer to liberals as unable to understand business, anti-business, etc. It happened just today - AGAIN. The fact is the west coast is where all the tech companies are and these states are liberal. California used to be Reagan country but the republicans tossed that allegiance out the window when they embraced the social conservatives. Sorry but thems the facts. Its just like when your dad said "I pay the bills, I make the rules around here". Well the socially liberal people are paying the bills and thats the way it is. No matter what someone's admiration for the bible belt is, there is no tax base there. We need foreign workers to compete and that requires tolerance ... the alternative is for the intolerant conservatives to build up industries in the bible belt that mirror comm, software etc. and create universities on the scale of MIT and berkeley and then they might have traction when they tell the rest of the country that Gays don't deserve to be treated like everybody else, and we all need to teach creationism etc.
