But your mainstream Republicanism isn't what the party is in many places. Certainly not here. It runs on evangelical Christianity, make gays against the law (and, yes, I mean that, not anything about *special* rights) and that if you are a Democrat you are evil (their word). Granted, that is not all Republicans here, but it is the driving force and the voice. Amazingly, to me, the rhetoric has toned down this election. But my Representative is running against a woman from another old Alabama political family. I hope, though, that is an indicator that the rhetoric is dying down, period.

There are simple reasons of survival that many people fear the voice that is heard from the Republican party. I don't trust that Bush is doing more than paying lip-service to being different, or can control factions of his own party. It would take more evidence for me to believe that the party had returned to its conservative fiscal and pragmatic roots. As a party, not individuals within it, I see it as a party that wants to mess with my life way too much in a negative way.

OT I got kicked out of the Lutheran church when I was 16 because I debated FOR evolution. Banned from my family and disinherited by my father.

Ish, what Lutheran church practices creationism? Was this a LCMS church? I knew Missouri Synod was right wing, but I had no idea...TIA for any further info you are willing to share, if not, sincere apologies for the intrusion.
