I was in a brick and mortar, browsing through the Iwo Jima book a few weeks ago. I came across the part where the author and some of his family gained permission to visit that island for a small ceremony shortly after his father died. They arrived via the Marine Commandant's personal jet. Quite ironically, the island had been placed back under Japanese control many years back, it has a small Japanese military installation on it, and of course a memorial to the many Japanese boys that died there too. Its off limits to regular tourists so their visit had to be arranged through the military.

When the family arrived on island, they found that much of the island is just as it was over 50 years ago with beach areas completely covered in spent shell casings and other weathered relics of that long past battle rusting and corroded by the weather and passage of time. There has been no development there, unlike Guam where the Japanese tourists now cavort on the beaches that were once guarded with Japanese pill boxes and rest in modern hotels that have replaced the killing zones of long ago where so many American and Japanese boys once lost their lives. Not sure which is the more fitting memorial.

Apparently Rosenthal is still alive in San Fran. Wonder if this controversy is dealt with in Bradley's book? There are lots of Rosenthals in S.F. What's his first name?

I don't suppose Rosenthal is a stock hound or surfs SI. But if he does:

Rosy, you got anything to say about this?
